In the competitive UK contracting market, Sirius Group has emerged as an industry leader by strategically optimizing its extensive equipment fleet. The company focuses on reducing maintenance costs, lowering fuel consumption, and enhancing residual values while maintaining productivity, operational efficiency, and operator satisfaction. Kobelco excavators have become instrumental in achieving these strategic objectives through their exceptional fuel efficiency.
Stuart Kirk, responsible for managing the company's modern equipment fleet, oversees machinery deployed across diverse operations from demolition to civil engineering. "We continuously evaluate new products in the market," Stuart explained. "As a group handling substantial contracts and equipment rentals during idle periods, we require high-performance, reliable machinery to keep projects on schedule. We're willing to challenge conventional choices when we identify equipment that meets our needs."
This innovative approach was demonstrated four years ago when Sirius Group invested in two K-Tec/Volvo A30G scraper combinations. Despite initial industry skepticism, the decision proved successful, delivering both operational efficiency and significant profitability.
As part of its annual equipment investment program, Sirius Group recently acquired six new Kobelco excavators through dealer Molson Equipment. This purchase marked a strategic shift from the company's previous multi-brand excavator fleet.
"We don't maintain in-house maintenance teams," Stuart noted. "We rely on new equipment warranties and dealer expertise for servicing. With our Leeds headquarters and nationwide operations, we needed a regional supplier we could trust. Molson Equipment's new Darlington depot expansion provided the confidence we required for this partnership."
Beyond geographic considerations, performance metrics significantly influenced the purchasing decision. "Fuel reduction remains a corporate priority," Stuart emphasized. "We monitor operator statistics and reward those who maintain equipment well and achieve optimal fuel consumption. Feedback from other Kobelco operators confirmed the machines' fuel efficiency and reliability, which our demonstration units subsequently validated."
The order comprised six machines ranging from 24-ton SK230SRLC-7 to 38-ton demolition-spec SK350LC-10E excavators. The company implemented a distinctive branding scheme, departing from Kobelco's traditional blue livery. Marketing specialist Richard Gregory spearheaded the visual redesign, collaborating with Molson Equipment to execute the customized appearance.
The company simultaneously invested in high-quality attachments, including Miller quick couplers and MST buckets, recognizing that superior components contribute to long-term operational savings.
Initial deployments in Liverpool and Doncaster provided opportunities to evaluate the new equipment under working conditions.
At the Liverpool site, an SK300LC-10E processed demolition materials at a former football club redevelopment. Site manager Adrian reported positive operator feedback, particularly regarding the machine's smooth operation and power. The company's policy of assigning one machine per operator, regardless of seniority, contributed to operator satisfaction.
In Doncaster, both SK300 and SK350 models demonstrated their capabilities in demolition and drainage pipe installation. The heavier SK350, equipped with specialized demolition protections, handled spoil loading while the SK300 efficiently executed excavation and pipe-laying operations.
The Kobelco excavators' Hino diesel engines delivered the promised fuel efficiency, a critical factor in Sirius Group's purchasing calculus. "Any fuel savings multiply significantly across six machines over their operational lifespan," Stuart calculated.
The company also valued Kobelco's manufacturing quality, comparing favorably to established market leaders like Volvo and Caterpillar. "Operators appreciate these machines, and their performance meets our expectations perfectly," Stuart concluded.
With positive initial results, these distinctive green-and-gray excavators may represent just the beginning of Sirius Group's transition to Kobelco equipment in its ongoing fleet optimization strategy.
