Picture this: women truck drivers maneuvering massive steel beasts across international highways, not just as striking figures on the road but as vital links in global trade networks connecting China with the world. Volvo Trucks is actively cultivating such a formidable workforce through its specialized training programs.
On August 10, 2025, Volvo Trucks China's Green Driving Academy and Mulan Training Camp concluded successfully in Anhui Orica. More than just a skills development program, the event represented a profound journey of professional growth and personal empowerment.
Since its launch in 2014, Volvo Trucks' Green Driving Academy has trained over a thousand students across eleven years, providing robust talent support for China's logistics industry. Responding to China's booming TIR (Transports Internationaux Routiers) cross-border transportation sector, this year's program introduced specialized courses in international road transport.
These courses aim to systematically enhance participants' international transportation skills, boosting the global competitiveness of Chinese logistics brands while establishing more reliable "steel camel caravans" for trade between China and partner countries along the Belt and Road routes.
With the rapid development of the logistics industry, women drivers are playing increasingly significant roles, bringing unique qualities of meticulousness, patience, and responsibility to the sector. First launched in 2022, the Mulan Training Camp helps female truck drivers enhance their skills, overcome professional barriers, and demonstrate their distinctive value in transportation.
This year's program expanded its focus beyond professional development to address participants' mental health and family relationships. Special sessions on work-life balance helped these "sister truckers" achieve harmony between career and family, creating mutual empowerment between individuals and the industry.
"Volvo Trucks has consistently supported women drivers' development worldwide," said Xie Zhiqiang, Vice President of Corporate Communication, Marketing and Public Affairs at Volvo Group China and Volvo Trucks China. "Since 2017, our 'Iron Women' initiative has helped hundreds of women in developing countries acquire truck driving skills. The Mulan Training Camp continues this global commitment."
Melanie Delemarle, CFO of Volvo Group China and Volvo Trucks China, shared her personal experience: "As a finance professional who obtained a truck driver's license this January to better understand our products, I truly appreciate the challenges these women face. Everyone here today is a frontline warrior in our industry."
The event featured driving skill competitions where participants demonstrated their enhanced capabilities while discovering untapped potential and teamwork abilities. These sessions not only increased engagement but also strengthened the women's professional confidence, proving that excellence in truck driving knows no gender.
The Green Driving Academy and Mulan Training Camp have become key platforms for Volvo Trucks to empower logistics professionals and advance the industry. Moving forward, the company will continue using human-centric approaches to create growth opportunities for drivers, enhancing their professional fulfillment while making every journey safer, more efficient, and more meaningful.
Volvo's efforts extend beyond skill development to building a healthier, more sustainable logistics ecosystem. By addressing drivers' professional growth, mental wellbeing, and family dynamics, the company is infusing the industry with greater humanity and vitality.
