Project Launch: Kyrgyz Section Takes the Lead

The CKU Railway project officially commenced on December 27, 2023, with a grand launch ceremony in Jalal-Abad, Kyrgyzstan. The Kyrgyz Republic has already issued tender notices for the construction of temporary roads and power supply lines along its section, signaling accelerated preparatory work. According to plans, main construction of bridges and tunnels will begin this July.

Engineering Overview: Challenges and Opportunities

The Kyrgyz section spans 304.94 kilometers across Naryn and Jalal-Abad regions. The route begins at the Torugart Pass on the China-Kyrgyzstan border, traversing challenging terrain including the Moldo-Too and Fergana mountain ranges, and crossing the Alabuka River before reaching Makmal. The line features both standard gauge (167.5 km) and broad gauge (138.8 km) segments, with a rail transfer station planned at Makmal.

Engineering challenges are substantial: the route includes 27 tunnels totaling 103.86 kilometers and 46 bridges spanning 15 kilometers, with tunnel and bridge structures accounting for 39% of the total length. Twenty stations will be built along the line, including border checkpoints at Torugart and Jalal-Abad.

Construction Priorities: Infrastructure First
  • Road networks: Six sections totaling about 119 kilometers of new and upgraded temporary roads for material transport.
  • Power infrastructure: Four 110kV power connections, four substations, and 265 kilometers of temporary power lines to ensure reliable electricity for construction.

The initial tender, valued at approximately $42 million, covers these preparatory works scheduled for completion within 169 days starting March 2025.

Technical Specifications: Future-Proof Design

The Kyrgyz section will be built as a single-track railway using diesel traction but designed for future electrification. With a design speed of 120 km/h, the line's most innovative feature is the Makmal transfer station, which will enable seamless movement between standard and broad gauge networks.

Strategic Significance: Reshaping Eurasian Trade

More than just a railway, the CKU project forms a crucial southern corridor for the China-Europe rail network. In today's complex geopolitical and economic environment, existing routes struggle to meet growing freight demands and risk diversification needs.

When completed, this route will become China's shortest land connection to Central Asia, cutting approximately 900 kilometers and 7-8 days from current rail journeys between East Asia and Southern Europe. The economic implications are profound: reduced transportation costs could significantly increase trade volumes across the region.

Future Prospects: Connectivity and Development

The CKU Railway promises to stimulate economic cooperation between China and Central Asian nations while enhancing regional connectivity. As infrastructure improves, new development opportunities will emerge along the corridor, potentially transforming local economies.

Meanwhile, China's domestic section of the railway, facing fewer geographical challenges than the Kyrgyz portion, is expected to begin construction within the next two years. Together, these segments will form a new steel artery across Eurasia—a modern Silk Road for the 21st century.
